Reappointment of the NIHR Secretary-General

During its 8th regular meeting, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Council of Commissioners has reappointed Chancellor Yasser Ghanim Shaheen a Secretary-General of the NIHR, who has joined the NIHR since its inception more than ten years ago as Legal Affairs Director, then Assistant Secretary-General and then Acting Secretary-General.

On this occasion, the Head and members of the Council of Commissioners and the staff of the NIHR Secretariat-General congratulated the Secretary-General for his efforts to improve the work of the Secretariat-General in the past period and wished him further success.

It is worth mentioning that Shahin holds a Master’s Degree in Law from the University of Durham in the United Kingdom, worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and graduated in the diplomatic corps, as he worked in the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bahrain at the UN Office in Geneva, upon the establishment of the Human Rights Council in 2006, and a member of a delegation of the Kingdom of Bahrain in the first session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Kingdom of Bahrain as the first country to be reviewed in the world in 2008.  Prior to that, he was Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the USA in Washington, D.C.  He was also a member of the legal team of the Kingdom of Bahrain before the International Court of Justice regarding the issue of the Border Dispute between Bahrain and Qatar, between 1999 and 2001.
